Sisters
Heritage District · Sisters, Oregon
A small town on the eastern slope of the Cascades where the highway from Bend meets the road over McKenzie Pass, named for the three peaks that stand above it. A town ordinance requires new building fronts to follow an 1880s frontier style, which has produced a wholly consistent Western streetscape that is more convincing than the usual version of the idea. It fills twice a year, for a rodeo in June and for an outdoor quilt show in July that hangs quilts on every building in the town.
West Adams Avenue, Sisters, Oregon, 97759, United States
The town is open year round and free to walk. Shops and cafes keep normal retail hours and close early by city standards, earlier still outside summer. ⚠ THE MCKENZIE PASS SCENIC BYWAY (OR-242) IS CLOSED BY SNOW FROM ABOUT NOVEMBER TO JUNE and its opening date varies by weeks from year to year - check before planning around it. The Sisters Rodeo occupies a weekend in June and the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show a day in July; both fill the town and all lodging for miles around.
