Skagit Valley Tulip Fields
Flower Farm · Mount Vernon, Washington
Commercial tulip and daffodil fields on the Skagit River delta an hour north of Seattle, grown for bulbs rather than for visitors, which is why they run to the horizon in solid blocks of colour. The Skagit Valley Tulip Festival has run each April since 1984 and draws several hundred thousand people to a rural county with two-lane roads. THE FIELDS MOVE EVERY YEAR because the growers rotate crops, so last year's location is not this year's - the festival publishes a bloom map, and using it is the difference between a good day and a wasted one.

THE BLOOM IS THE WHOLE THING AND IT LASTS ABOUT THREE WEEKS. The festival runs through April, but the tulips open when they open - some years in late March, some years not until the third week of April, and a warm spell can end it early. Display gardens generally open 9 AM to 7 PM through the season and close entirely the rest of the year. Check the festival bloom map before travelling; it is updated through the season.
