Skellig Michael

Early Christian Monastery Of Stone Beehive Cells On A Sea Crag, Founded Between The 6th And 8th Centuries; UNESCO World Heritage Site (1996) · Portmagee, Kerry

Skellig Michael (Sceilg Mhichil) is a jagged sea crag about 12 km off the tip of the Iveragh Peninsula in County Kerry, and one of the most extraordinary places in Europe. Somewhere between the 6th and 8th centuries a community of monks climbed it and built a monastery of drystone beehive cells and oratories on a ledge roughly 180 m above the Atlantic, reached by stone stairs cut into the rock. The buildings have stood without mortar for over a thousand years, which is why UNESCO listed the island in 1996. Visitors come for the climb, the silence of the cells, the puffins in early summer, the gannets on Little Skellig next door, and because the island stood in for Luke Skywalker's refuge in the recent Star Wars films. The honest caveat is a big one: landings are seasonal, capped at a small number of people a day, cancelled whenever the swell is wrong, and the island can close at short notice - the OPW closed it for the rest of the 2026 season early. Many people who plan a trip never set foot on it; confirm the 2027 season before you plan around it.

Island about 12 km off the Iveragh coast; licensed landing boats leave Portmagee, and some from Ballinskelligs and Derrynane, Portmagee, Kerry, Ireland

Seasonal. Landings normally run from roughly mid May to late September or early October, weather permitting, and only on licensed boats - the 2026 season was set for about 9 May to 1 October but the OPW closed the island early, so no landings run now; 2027 bookings are reported to open around November - confirm. Boats leave Portmagee (a few from Ballinskelligs and Derrynane) mostly between about 8 am and 12.30 pm, take about 45 minutes, and allow roughly 2.5 hours ashore. There is no visiting outside the season and no public ferry. Landing places must be booked directly with a licensed boat operator, months ahead. Eco cruises round the islands without landing run on a longer season. Portmagee is about 1 hour 15 minutes by car from Killarney; there is no practical bus.
