A National Historic Site On The Point Where French Settlers First Landed In 1720 And Where British Troops Later Built Fort Amherst, With Mi'Kmaq History, Interpretive Panels And Trails With Views Across Charlottetown Harbour. A Short Stop Across The Water From The City · Rocky Point, Prince Edward Island
Skmaqn - Port-la-Joye - Fort Amherst National Historic Site lies at Rocky Point on the south shore of Prince Edward Island, facing Charlottetown across the harbour (confirm). The name joins three layers of history. Skmaqn is a Mikmaq name, usually given as waiting place, for a point of land that Mikmaq people knew long before Europeans arrived on Epekwitk, their name for the Island (confirm meaning and spelling). Port-la-Joye was the first French settlement on the Island, founded in 1720, and Fort Amherst was the British earthwork raised here after 1758, when the colony changed hands and many Acadian families were deported. Today grassy ramparts, trails, interpretive panels and a visitor building tell these stories, with wide views across the harbour to the Charlottetown skyline. Allow one to two hours. Admission may be charged in season, and the grounds are open to walk when the building is closed (confirm).
