Skogskyrkogarden, the Woodland Cemetery

UNESCO World Heritage Site (1994): Asplund And Lewerentz'S Landscape Cemetery Of 1917 1940, A Landmark Of Modern Architecture, Where Greta Garbo Is Buried · Stockholm, Stockholm County

Skogskyrkogarden, the Woodland Cemetery, lies in the pine forest of Enskede in southern Stockholm and is one of the few twentieth-century places on the UNESCO World Heritage list, inscribed in 1994. Two young architects, Gunnar Asplund and Sigurd Lewerentz, won the design competition and shaped it from 1917 to 1940, setting graves among the trees instead of in rows, so that the forest itself does the work of consolation. The walk in follows the Way of the Cross past a great granite cross on an open sweep of lawn, with the Meditation Grove of elms on a hill beyond. Asplund's tiny Woodland Chapel, Lewerentz's classical Chapel of the Resurrection and the Woodland Crematorium with its Monument Hall portico are studied by architects from all over the world. Greta Garbo is buried here. It is free and open at all hours. The honest caveat: this is a working cemetery with funerals every day, not a park or a sight, and the chapels are usually closed except for services, so it suits architecture lovers and people seeking calm far more than a checklist traveller.

Sockenvagen 492, Enskede, southern Stockholm, beside Skogskyrkogarden metro station, Stockholm, Stockholm County, Sweden

The cemetery grounds are open every day of the year at all hours, with no gate and no ticket, though paths are dark and unlit away from the main roads after dusk in winter. The chapels and the crematorium are in daily use for funerals and are normally closed to casual visitors; you may see inside on a guided tour or on occasional open days - confirm it is open before you plan around a chapel. The visitor centre near the entrance usually opens in the summer season, roughly June to August, sometimes with weekends into September, and guided walks in English and Swedish are said to run on set summer days - check the current schedule and book through the City of Stockholm's cemetery administration if the tour needs a ticket. Getting there: take the SL metro green line towards Farsta strand to Skogskyrkogarden station, about 15 minutes from T-Centralen; the main entrance on Sockenvagen is a two-minute walk from the platform. Pay with a contactless card or the SL app at the barrier. Nothing needs booking for a simple walk.
