Sloss Furnaces National Historic Landmark
National Historic Landmark · Birmingham, Alabama
A blast furnace complex that made pig iron in the middle of Birmingham from 1882 until 1971 and was then, remarkably, not demolished — it is the only twentieth-century blast furnace in the United States preserved and open to the public as a museum. You walk among the stoves, the casting sheds and the blowing engines with almost nothing between you and the machinery. It is free, it runs a working metal arts programme with live casting, and in October it becomes a haunted house.
20 32nd Street North, Birmingham, Alabama, 35222, United States
FREE. Generally open Tuesday to Sunday, roughly 10 AM - 4 PM, closed Mondays and major holidays. Free guided tours on a posted schedule. Largely given over to Sloss Fright Furnace through October, when ordinary daytime visiting is restricted.
