Snake River Canyon

Bridger Teton National Forest · Alpine, Wyoming

The stretch of the Snake River between Hoback Junction and Alpine where the river runs through a narrow, forested canyon beside US 26/89, with an eight-mile whitewater section whose named class III rapids, Big Kahuna and Lunch Counter, make it the busiest rafting day trip from Jackson. Commercial companies run half-day trips with transport from late May to September, and the highway pull-offs above Lunch Counter let you watch rafts and river surfers riding its standing wave. It is in the Bridger-Teton National Forest. The whitewater section runs about 8 miles between the West Table and Sheep Gulch launch areas along US 26/89, with forest campgrounds beside the road. Early-season water is snowmelt-cold and fast, and the rapids ease as flows drop in late summer.
