The Slate Landscape Of North West Wales Is A Separate UNESCO Site (2021). Fast Weather, Large Crowds And A National Park Since 1951 · Llanberis, Wales

Snowdonia, called Eryri in Welsh, is a national park in north-west Wales, and Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa) at 1,085 m is the highest mountain in Wales and England. Six paths reach the summit. The Llanberis Path is the longest and easiest, the Pyg Track and the Miners' Track are the usual busy routes, and Crib Goch is a serious exposed scramble that kills people most years. The Snowdon Mountain Railway runs from Llanberis, needs booking, is cancelled in bad weather and does not always reach the summit. A cafe at the top is crowded and basic. Below the peaks are slate-quarry attractions such as Zip World and Bounce Below, the village of Beddgelert and the Italianate Portmeirion. Signs are in Welsh and English. The weather turns fast: wet and cloudy days are normal, and the summit queue on a clear August weekend is long. Pen-y-Pass parking must be booked. Cardiff is far away, about four hours by road.

The mountain and its paths are open all day and walking is FREE, though parking is paid. The Snowdon Mountain Railway runs only in the season, commonly from spring to autumn, and is CLOSED in winter and on days of high wind, ice or low cloud, with trains often stopping short of the summit. The summit cafe is open only when the railway is running and is CLOSED the rest of the year. Zip World and Bounce Below run timed slots, mostly daily in summer and fewer in winter, and need booking. Portmeirion is commonly open daily and charges entry. Pen-y-Pass car park opens early and its booking slots run out. Confirm all times before travelling, and check the mountain forecast.
