Snowy Mountains and Kosciuszko National Park

Mainland Australia'S Highest Country, Home To Mount Kosciuszko At 2,228 Metres And Reached From Jindabyne Or Thredbo, With Summer Wildflower Walks To The Summit And The Country'S Largest Ski Resorts, Perisher And Thredbo, Running Through Winter · Jindabyne, New South Wales

The Snowy Mountains hold mainland Australia's highest ground, a rolling alpine plateau rather than a jagged range, centred on Mount Kosciuszko at 2,228 metres inside Kosciuszko National Park. Jindabyne is the region's lake town and supply base; Thredbo and Perisher, a short drive further up, run the country's largest ski resorts each winter and turn into walking and mountain-biking villages the rest of the year. The two faces of this place are genuinely different. In summer, wildflowers cover the Main Range in January and February and the walk to the summit from Thredbo's chairlift is a long but unremarkable stroll, not a technical climb. In winter, snow closes most of that same access and the valley reorients around lift passes, snow chains and accommodation booked out months ahead. Charlotte Pass and the Blue Lake cirque reward those who go further than the summit track. It is a genuinely long drive from Sydney or Canberra, not a day trip, and the two seasons should not be planned for with the same packing list or the same expectations of what will be open.

Kosciuszko National Park itself has no closing time, but what is actually open and accessible differs sharply by season. In summer, roughly December to April, the Kosciuszko walking tracks, the Thredbo chairlift and the Charlotte Pass road are open in daylight hours, with the chairlift running a set daytime timetable that shortens outside peak visitor months. In winter, roughly June to early October, the walking tracks above the snowline are generally closed or impassable without snow gear, and the valley instead runs on resort lift opening hours at Thredbo and Perisher, both of which post their own daily lift times and close entirely on a fixed date each spring that shifts year to year with snow cover. A park entry fee applies by vehicle per day or on a multi-day pass, checked at the park boundary gates, which keep standard daytime hours.
