Snug Harbor Cultural Center

Historic District · Staten Island, New York

⚠ AN 83-ACRE CAMPUS OF GREEK REVIVAL TEMPLES ON STATEN ISLAND — built from 1833 as SAILORS' SNUG HARBOR, a retirement home for merchant seamen, and ⚠ HOLDING ONE OF THE FINEST GROUPS OF GREEK REVIVAL BUILDINGS IN AMERICA. It is now a cultural campus with botanical gardens, including ⚠ AN AUTHENTIC CHINESE SCHOLAR'S GARDEN BUILT BY ARTISANS FROM SUZHOU.

1000 Richmond Terrace, Staten Island, New York, 10301, United States

⚠ MUCH OF THE 83-ACRE CAMPUS IS FREE TO WALK, and FREE PARKING ON SITE is extraordinary for New York City. ⚠ BUT CHECK THE CHINESE SCHOLAR'S GARDEN'S OWN OPENING DAYS BEFORE YOU TRAVEL — they are NARROWER THAN THE CAMPUS'S, it is separately ticketed and cheap, and arriving to find the best thing here locked is the standard Snug Harbor disappointment. ⚠ THERE IS NO SINGLE CAMPUS PASS: the Chinese garden, the Noble Maritime Collection, the Staten Island Museum and the Children's Museum are all ticketed independently and keep different hours. ⚠ THE STATEN ISLAND FERRY IS FREE, passes the Statue of Liberty, and a bus or taxi runs west from the terminal. ⚠ Late spring and summer for the gardens, which are most of the point. ⚠ HOURS AND PRICES NOT VERIFIED.
