Sogod Bay and Limasawa

Whale Sharks That Are Found Rather Than Fed, And An Island Whose Claim To The First Mass In 1521 Butuan Has Never Conceded · Padre Burgos, Southern Leyte

SOGOD BAY IS A DEEP, SHELTERED BAY IN SOUTHERN LEYTE WHERE WHALE SHARKS COME THROUGH IN THE COOLER MONTHS AND ARE FOUND RATHER THAN FED - the same honest arrangement as Donsol and the same deliberate refusal of Oslob's guaranteed sightings. NOTHING IS PROMISED HERE. What is reliable is the diving: WALLS, MACRO LIFE AND THRESHER SHARK SIGHTINGS off Padre Burgos, on an undeveloped coast with a handful of small dive resorts and almost nobody else. AND OFF THE SOUTHERN TIP LIES LIMASAWA, WHICH THE PHILIPPINE STATE RECOGNISES AS THE SITE OF THE FIRST MASS IN THE PHILIPPINES IN MARCH 1521 - A CLAIM BUTUAN HAS DISPUTED FOR OVER A CENTURY AND HAS NEVER CONCEDED, examined and re-examined by national committees. Two provinces, one date, and the argument is still live. THERE IS VERY LITTLE INFRASTRUCTURE ANYWHERE ALONG THIS COAST. Stay several days; a single morning is not enough when nothing at all is guaranteed.

Sogod Bay and Limasawa Island, Southern Leyte, Padre Burgos, Southern Leyte, Philippines

SOUTHERN LEYTE IS REACHED VIA TACLOBAN, roughly FOUR TO FIVE HOURS BY ROAD to Padre Burgos, or by ferry from Surigao to Liloan at the southern tip. DIVING AND WHALE SHARK TRIPS ARE ARRANGED THROUGH THE SMALL DIVE RESORTS at Padre Burgos and Napantao; there is no gate and no ticket office. THE WHALE SHARK SEASON IS ROUGHLY NOVEMBER TO MAY and NOTHING IS GUARANTEED - the animals are not fed and blank days are normal. SOME SITES HAVE STRONG CURRENTS AND ARE NOT FOR NOVICES. LIMASAWA IS REACHED BY PUMPBOAT FROM PADRE BURGOS OR LILOAN, weather-dependent, and has a shrine and markers; the ANNIVERSARY FALLS IN LATE MARCH. Carry cash; banking is thin outside Maasin. Crossings are cancelled in rough weather.
