Sogut is a small farming town of orchards and low hills in Bilecik province, about 30 km from Bilecik and some 130 km south-east of Bursa (confirm). Turkish tradition names it the cradle of the Ottoman state: here Ertugrul Gazi, father of Osman I, led a small Turkmen tribe in the late 13th century, and the lands granted to his band grew over the next generations into an empire. His tomb stands in a landscaped complex at the edge of the town, with a mosque, a museum of local history and displays on the early Ottoman story, and a statue and gardens that draw Turkish families all year. Each September a commemoration festival fills the streets with folk dances, horse sports, tents and crowds, and for a few days the town changes entirely. Outside the festival Sogut is quiet, with a few cafes, shops and small rooms, and the visit is as much about respect and atmosphere as about buildings. Plan two to three hours, travel by bus from Bilecik or Bursa, and confirm hours and the festival dates before going.
