Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum

Art Museum · New York, New York

Frank Lloyd Wright's only completed building in Manhattan, opened in 1959 six months after he died and sixteen years after he was commissioned. It is a single continuous quarter-mile ramp spiralling upward around an open rotunda under a glass dome, and artists objected from the start that no painting can hang straight on a curved, sloping wall. It was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2019 as part of a group of Wright buildings.
