Somerset Place
Historic Site · Creswell, North Carolina
A plantation on the shore of Lake Phelps that operated from 1785 to 1865 and became one of the largest in the Upper South, worked by more than eight hundred enslaved people across its life. The site interprets that community directly, and it is unusual in American historic sites for the depth of its research into named individuals and families - descendants of the enslaved community have gathered here since the 1980s, which shaped how the place is told.
