Sonoma County Wine Region
Wine Region · Sonoma, California
Sonoma County is the wine country north of San Francisco Bay, spread across several valleys and coastal hills rather than one long corridor. Sonoma Valley, Russian River Valley, Dry Creek Valley and Alexander Valley are the best-known areas, with Healdsburg and the old plaza in the town of Sonoma as walkable bases. It is known for Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Zinfandel, and many visitors find it more relaxed and less formal than Napa Valley, which sits next door as its own live row. Tasting rooms range from tiny family places to large estates, and the drives between them are slower than they look. Most work best by appointment, and tasting fees vary, so confirm each one. The Sonoma Coast and the redwoods at Armstrong Redwoods lie nearby, adding scenery for a break from tasting. Harvest runs roughly August to October, and wildfire smoke or closures can affect plans in late summer and autumn, so check conditions.

Tasting rooms commonly open late morning and close in the late afternoon, often between about 10 or 11 in the morning and 4 or 5 in the afternoon, with some closing earlier midweek in winter. Many are open daily, but small producers may open only on weekends or by appointment, and some require a reservation even at walk-in hours. Hours shift with season and harvest, and fire or smoke can force short-notice closures. Confirm each winery's hours and booking rules directly, and allow a margin for driving between valleys, since distances on narrow roads are longer than they look on a map.
