Sonoma State Historic Park

State Park · Sonoma, California

Sonoma State Historic Park is not one site but a cluster of historic places in and around Sonoma Plaza, in the town of Sonoma in Sonoma County. It protects Mission San Francisco Solano, the last of the California missions, founded in 1823 - confirm - the Sonoma Barracks, the Toscano Hotel and, as a separate unit a short way from the plaza, the Vallejo Home known as Lachryma Montis (confirm access). The plaza is also tied to the Bear Flag Revolt of 1846, when settlers raised a flag declaring a California republic that lasted only weeks. The park does not have a gate or a single campus: you walk the square, pay at a building or by one ticket, and fit visits around the town's restaurants and tasting rooms. Hours and which buildings are open vary, so confirm before you drive, and note that the plaza is busiest at weekends and harvest. It suits history lovers, couples and families, and takes a few hours at an easy pace, with parking on the plaza streets often tight.

363 3rd St W, Sonoma, California, 95476, United States

California State Parks has generally opened the plaza buildings in the daytime, often from late morning to late afternoon, with some units open fewer days or closed in winter - confirm the hours for each building, since the mission, barracks, hotel and Vallejo Home may differ. A single admission may cover several units on the same day - confirm what the ticket includes and where to buy it. Staffing is thin and some buildings open only for events or on certain days; the Vallejo Home is a separate site with its own schedule. Tasting rooms and restaurants around the plaza keep their own hours, often late in the evening. Check the State Parks page the week you plan to visit, particularly for weekday winter trips when buildings may be closed.
