Soo Locks
Industrial Heritage · Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan
The Soo Locks are a set of locks on the St. Marys River at Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, run by the US Army Corps of Engineers. They lift ships about 21 feet between Lake Superior and the lower Lake Huron level, and every ore boat, grain carrier and tanker moving between the upper lakes and the rest of the system goes through here. The Poe Lock takes the biggest freighters, up to 1,000 feet long. A free visitor centre and raised observation platform put you a few yards from the chamber, so you watch a ship drop or rise with the water in about an hour. It suits anyone curious about shipping, engineering or the Great Lakes. The wait is the catch: nothing moves on a timetable, so check the vessel schedule first. Shipping runs roughly late March to mid January and the locks close in winter. Allow one to three hours, more with the boat tour. Confirm hours and security rules and tour times before you go.

The visitor centre and observation platform are seasonal and follow the shipping season rather than the calendar, commonly opening in spring and closing in the autumn, with daytime hours that often stretch into the evening in summer. Exact dates and hours change by year and by staffing, so confirm with the Army Corps or the Sault Ste. Marie visitor bureau before a long drive. The locks themselves handle ships around the clock during the shipping season, roughly late March to mid January, and close for winter maintenance. A security check applies at the entrance, so allow a few extra minutes and leave bags small. The boat tour through the locks is a separate concession on its own seasonal schedule - confirm tour times and booking directly with the operator.
