Sopot

A Baltic Spa Town In The Tricity And Poland'S Summer Party Capital, With The Longest Wooden Pier In Europe At About 500 M, A Long Sandy Beach, A Pedestrian Main Street And An Opera Forest. Easy Half Day From Gdansk By Suburban Train · Sopot, Pomeranian

Sopot is a small Baltic spa town on the Gulf of Gdansk, squeezed between Gdansk and Gdynia in the Tricity, and Poland's best-known summer party resort. Its wooden pier, about 500 m long and often called the longest in Europe, runs out over the sea and charges a fee in season. Monte Cassino Street is the pedestrian main drag, lined with cafes, bars and souvenir stalls, and the quirky Crooked House stands on it. A broad sandy beach fronts the town, and the Forest Opera hosts summer festivals and big concerts. The SKM suburban train from Gdansk takes about 20 minutes, so it works as a half-day from the old town. It suits people who want sea air, a promenade, nightlife and people-watching. It does not suit those after quiet, cheap or wild coast: July and August bring dense crowds and high prices, weekends are loud late into the night, and the Baltic is cold, often only fit for a short dip even in midsummer. Visit outside peak weeks for a calmer, cheaper town.

Sopot Pier and Monte Cassino Street, between Gdansk and Gdynia on the Gulf of Gdansk, Sopot, Pomeranian, Poland

The town, the beach and Monte Cassino Street are open all day and all year and are free to walk. The pier is a gated promenade: entry is ticketed in the main season, commonly late spring to early autumn, and is often free or unstaffed in winter, though it may close in storms or ice. Lifeguard cover on the beach is normally only in summer, roughly from late June to August, with flags and times posted at the towers. Shops and cafes keep long summer hours, and many bars run until the early morning at weekends. The Crooked House is a shopping and cafe building, open on shop hours. The Forest Opera is closed outside event dates, so check the programme. Confirm all of it close to your date.
