Sotterley Plantation
National Historic Landmark · Hollywood, Maryland
A tobacco plantation on a bluff over the Patuxent in St. Mary's County, begun around 1703, making the house one of the oldest still standing in Maryland. What sets it apart from the other colonial houses in this state is what survives beside it: an original slave cabin, one of very few left in Maryland, and an interpretation built with the descendants of the people who were held here. It is a National Historic Landmark and a UNESCO Site of Memory on the Slave Route Project — one of a small number in the United States.
