Soudan Underground Mine State Park

Minnesota State Park · Soudan, Minnesota

Minnesota's oldest and deepest iron mine, worked from 1882 until 1962 and known while it operated as the Cadillac of underground mines because of how well it was built. It is now a state park, and the tour is the reason: you put on a hard hat, get into the original cage and drop half a mile straight down in three minutes to Level 27, then ride a train through the drifts to the last face the miners worked. Nothing about it is reconstructed. It is the real mine, with the original headframe, engine house and hoist still in place above.

1379 Stuntz Bay Road, Soudan, Minnesota, 55782, United States

Seasonal. Underground tours generally run from late May through early October, several times daily, on specific booked departure times capped by the capacity of the mine cage — book ahead in July and August. There are NO underground tours in winter. A Minnesota state park vehicle permit is required to enter the park, with the tour charged separately on top. The surface plant, engine house and trails are open year round on the park permit alone.
