South Beach and the FDR Boardwalk
Beach · Staten Island, New York
⚠ ONE OF THE LONGEST BOARDWALKS IN THE WORLD, at roughly two and a half miles, running along Staten Island's eastern shore with ⚠ THE VERRAZZANO-NARROWS BRIDGE AT ONE END AND THE OPEN LOWER BAY AHEAD. It is free, it is the quietest of New York City's major beaches, and ⚠ ALMOST NO VISITOR TO THE CITY HAS HEARD OF IT.
Father Capodanno Boulevard, Staten Island, New York, 10305, United States
⚠ FREE, INCLUDING THE PARKING — which no other major New York City beach offers, and it is the single biggest practical reason to come. The whole day can cost nothing: the Staten Island Ferry is free and the S51 runs down the eastern shore. ⚠⚠ SWIMMING IS GUARDED IN SEASON ONLY, roughly late June to early September, DURING POSTED HOURS — and swimming outside those hours is PROHIBITED RATHER THAN DISCOURAGED. The Parks Department enforces it and the currents toward the Narrows are real. ⚠ LIFEGUARD STAFFING SHORTAGES HAVE AFFECTED CITY BEACH OPENINGS in recent years; confirm the season with NYC Parks. ⚠ THE BOARDWALK IS OPEN AND WORTH WALKING YEAR ROUND — a clear winter day gives the sharpest Verrazzano view and you will have two and a half miles almost to yourself. ⚠ CHECK WHETHER ANY SECTION IS CLOSED for post-Sandy coastal defence works. ⚠ Water quality advisories follow heavy rain.
