South Carolina State House

National Historic Landmark · Columbia, South Carolina

The South Carolina capitol in Columbia, begun in 1855, interrupted by the Civil War and not finished until 1903. On its western wall are bronze stars marking where Sherman’s artillery struck the unfinished building in February 1865, left deliberately in place. The grounds hold a dense and contested collection of monuments, and in July 2015 the Confederate battle flag was removed from them by act of the legislature.
