South Dakota State Capitol
Historic Site · Pierre, South Dakota
South Dakota's capitol, completed in 1910 above the Missouri River at Pierre, built closely on the plan of Montana's and finished with a marble floor laid by sixty-six Italian artisans who were each allowed to set one blue stone as a signature. Visitors still hunt for them. The grounds hold a flaming fountain fed by a natural gas artesian well, and it is all free.
