South Higgins Lake State Park

Michigan State Park · Roscommon, Michigan

South Higgins Lake State Park sits on the southern shore of Higgins Lake near Roscommon, in the middle of the northern Lower Peninsula. Higgins is a deep, glacial lake known for very clear water, sandy shallows and a sharp drop to deep blue, which makes it popular for swimming, boating, fishing and scuba. The park is built around a large campground that books out in summer, a wide beach, a boat launch and a day-use area with picnic tables. It suits families, groups and campers who want a busy, social lake week rather than solitude. Be honest about the crowds: July weekends are packed, the beach is full by late morning, and the campground feels like a small town. North Higgins Lake State Park is nearby and separate, and Hartwick Pines is about 30 minutes away. Dogs are kept off the main beach. A Recreation Passport is required for every vehicle; confirm reservation timing, the pet beach and current rules before you drive.

106 State Park Drive, Roscommon, Michigan, 48653, United States

The park is open year-round, with day use generally from about 8 in the morning until 10 at night and campers allowed to arrive and leave on their own schedule. Summer is the main season, when the beach, boat launch and campground are busiest; the camp season runs from spring into fall, and some facilities close or reduce service in winter. The lake is also used in winter for ice fishing and snowmobiling when conditions allow, though ice safety is never certain. Exact campground opening dates, beach conditions and any day-use limits change by year, so confirm with the park or the state reservation system before you plan a long drive, especially for weekends.
