South Mountain Park and Preserve
City Of Phoenix Mountain Preserve · Phoenix, Arizona
A mountain preserve of about 16,000 acres on Phoenix's southern edge, billed as one of the largest municipal parks in the United States. Its three ridges rise above the city, crossed by more than 50 miles of trails for hikers, mountain bikers and horse riders, and a winding road climbs to Dobbins Lookout at about 2,330 feet for views across the Valley, especially at sunset. Hohokam petroglyphs are carved into rocks along several trails, and stone ramadas built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s still stand. The South Mountain Environmental Education Center explains the desert. Under Phoenix's heat safety programme, the Holbert, Mormon, Hau'pal and part of the National trails close from 8 AM to 5 PM on days with an Extreme Heat Warning.
