South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center

Nature Preserve · South Padre Island, Texas

Fifty acres of dune, wetland and Laguna Madre shoreline crossed by boardwalks, with bird blinds, spotting towers and an alligator that has been there long enough to have a name. It sits on the Central Flyway at the point where migrating birds either make landfall after crossing the Gulf or gather to leave, which is why serious birders build entire trips around a few April mornings here.

⚠ ADMISSION AND HOURS ARE NOT STATED HERE — I could not verify them; check before travelling, and ⚠ ASK WHETHER THE BOARDWALKS AND THE VISITOR CENTRE KEEP DIFFERENT HOURS, because birds move at dawn and dusk. Five miles of flat railed boardwalk over dune and wetland. ⚠ APRIL AND EARLY MAY ARE THE REASON TO COME — Gulf migration landfall. ⚠ Resident alligators are visible from the boardwalk. Bring serious mosquito repellent.
