South Street
Nightlife District · Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
The strip running west from the Delaware through Queen Village and Bella Vista, which has been Philadelphia's counterculture street since the 1960s — the Orlons sang about it in 1963 and the question they asked, where do all the hippies meet, was answered here for the next two decades. It is now a mix of tattoo parlours, record shops, cheesesteak counters, bars, music venues and a good deal of mosaic-covered wall, and it is at its best at night. It is neither as edgy as it was nor as sanitised as visitors expect.
