South Street Seaport

Heritage District · New York, New York

Eleven blocks of early nineteenth-century warehouses and counting houses on the East River, the largest concentration of pre-Civil War commercial buildings in Manhattan, preserved as a historic district in 1977 when the rest of the waterfront was being demolished. ⚠ THIS WAS NEW YORK'S PORT — the whole city's wealth came across these cobbles, and the SOUTH STREET SEAPORT MUSEUM keeps a fleet of historic ships still moored at the piers.

Fulton Street at Water Street, New York, New York, 10038, United States

An open district — free to walk, no gate. The cobbled streets, the piers, the Brooklyn Bridge view and the PIER 17 ROOFTOP are free at all times. ⚠ THE SOUTH STREET SEAPORT MUSEUM AND ITS HISTORIC SHIPS ARE TICKETED AND THEIR OPENING PATTERN HAS BEEN UNSTABLE — the museum was flooded by Hurricane Sandy in 2012 and its galleries, ships and opening days have changed repeatedly since. ⚠ CHECK BEFORE TRAVELLING. Sailing on the schooner Pioneer is seasonal. Unlike the Financial District, the Seaport trades at weekends.
