South Yuba River State Park

State Park · Penn Valley, California

South Yuba River State Park follows the South Yuba River through the Sierra foothills of Nevada County, near Nevada City and Grass Valley, in old Gold Country. It is a long, narrow park rather than a single destination, with several separate river access points, each with its own parking - confirm which are open. Visitors come for swimming holes in granite pools, clear green water, shaded canyon walks and the Bridgeport Covered Bridge, a long historic covered bridge and the best-known landmark. The Independence Trail, a wheelchair-accessible flume trail, is widely described - confirm its current condition. The snowmelt water is cold and fast in spring and has killed swimmers; summer brings heat, crowds and full lots. Poison oak and rattlesnakes are present. It suits swimmers, families and history fans, and it is a poor choice on a hot summer Saturday if you hate crowds or cannot park far away and walk.

California State Parks has generally run South Yuba River State Park as a day-use area from around sunrise to sunset, with a visitor centre and the covered bridge area on their own seasonal schedule - confirm the current hours, which access points have staffed kiosks or pay machines and when the visitor centre is open. Summer weekends fill the lots by mid-morning and parking is enforced along nearby roads. Winter and spring storms can close river access, trails and roads, and wildfire or smoke can shut parts of the park for long periods. Check the State Parks page and local road alerts on the day you go.
