Spatsizi Plateau Wilderness Provincial Park
British Columbia Wilderness Park Of About 6,960 Square Kilometres On The Spatsizi Plateau In Tahltan Territory; Often Called The Serengeti Of Canada For Its Concentrations Of Caribou, Stone Sheep, Moose, Grizzly And Wolf · Iskut, British Columbia
Spatsizi is nearly seven thousand square kilometres of plateau, mountain and river in northern British Columbia, and it is sometimes called THE SERENGETI OF CANADA - not for any resemblance to Africa but because the concentrations of large animals here are extraordinary by North American standards: woodland caribou, STONE SHEEP in one of their strongholds, moose, mountain goat, grizzly, black bear and wolf, all on open country where you can actually see them. The name comes from the Tahltan word for red goat, for the iron-stained slopes where the sheep pick up red dust. This is TAHLTAN TERRITORY and their use of it long predates the park. The SPATSIZI AND STIKINE RIVERS run through it and are serious multi-week wilderness paddling. THERE ARE NO ROADS INSIDE: access is a long walk in from Highway 37, a float plane, or the BC Rail grade at Tatogga, and visitor numbers are tiny.
East of Highway 37, Stikine Country, northern British Columbia, Iskut, British Columbia, Canada
NO GATE, NO VISITOR CENTRE AND ALMOST NO INFRASTRUCTURE. The season is ROUGHLY LATE JUNE TO EARLY SEPTEMBER, bounded by snow and by float plane operations. ACCESS IS BY FLOAT PLANE FROM DEASE LAKE OR TATOGGA, by a long hike in on the old road from Highway 37, or by river. BC PARKS PERMITS BACKCOUNTRY CAMPING with fees and asks parties to be self-sufficient; there are a small number of basic cabins and a guest lodge operating under permit. THE SPATSIZI AND STIKINE RIVER TRIPS ARE MULTI-WEEK EXPEDITIONS requiring a float plane drop and a pickup arranged in advance. AUTUMN IS GUIDE-OUTFITTER HUNTING SEASON across much of the region. THIS IS TAHLTAN TERRITORY - contact the Tahltan Central Government about travel through it. No cell coverage anywhere. Confirm everything with BC Parks well in advance.
