Spearfish Canyon

Scenic Highway · Spearfish, South Dakota

A narrow limestone gorge on the northern edge of the Black Hills, cut by Spearfish Creek, with walls of pale rock rising a thousand feet above a road that follows the old railway grade. The Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway runs about twenty miles along it on US 14A. The canyon holds three waterfalls a short walk from the road, and in late September and early October the birch and aspen turn against the limestone in the best autumn colour in South Dakota.

U.S. Highway 14A, Spearfish, South Dakota, 57783, United States

FREE and open year round, 24 hours. ⚠ THE BYWAY IS PLOUGHED AND OPEN IN WINTER, unlike most Black Hills high roads - which makes it one of the few scenic drives in the region available all year, and the frozen waterfalls are a genuine winter attraction. Trailhead car parks are small and fill in autumn. There are no services in the canyon beyond the lodge and a few seasonal stops.
