Spencer Hot Springs

Undeveloped Hot Springs On Bureau Of Land Management Land In The Big Smoky Valley, With A Metal Stock Tank Tub And Natural Pools; Free · Austin, Nevada

Spencer Hot Springs is a group of undeveloped hot springs on Bureau of Land Management land in the Big Smoky Valley of central Nevada, a few miles off NV 376 and roughly 20 to 30 minutes by car from the small town of Austin on US 50. Nevada is often said to have more hot springs than any other state, and Spencer is one of its best-known primitive soaks: a round metal livestock tank set into the ground and fed by a pipe from a scalding source, plus a rock-lined natural pool and smaller pools in the runoff. There is no fee, no staff, no lifeguard, no toilet and no rules board beyond the general ones of public land, and the setting is wide open sagebrush looking west to the Toiyabe Range, which makes sunset and the dark night sky part of the visit. It is remote and lightly visited, with cattle and wild burros wandering past, and some people soak nude. The springs are small and simple, a stop for a soak and a night under the stars rather than a destination in themselves; Austin (its own row) is the base for fuel and food.

NO OPENING TIME HERE WAS CHECKED. The typical pattern: Spencer Hot Springs is on open BLM land with no gate and no hours, so it can be reached at any time of day or night, free, all year, subject to the road and any closure the agency posts. There is no staff, no lifeguard and no fixed maintenance day. The traps that ruin a day are driving the gravel road after rain or snow in a low car, arriving after dark and missing the turn off NV 376, getting into a tub someone left scalding hot, running low on fuel far from Austin, and arriving without water or warm clothes on a winter night. Confirm current conditions and any new BLM rules before relying on this.
