Spottrup Castle
Denmark'S Best Preserved Medieval Castle, Built For The Bishops Of Viborg Around 1520, Behind Double Moats And Ramparts, With A Herb Garden · Rodding, Central Denmark Region
Spottrup Borg is a red-brick medieval castle in open farmland on the Salling peninsula, roughly 25 minutes by car north-west of Skive in north-west Jutland. It was built around 1520 for the Catholic bishops of Viborg, shortly before the Reformation of 1536 took it into Crown hands, and it is often described as the best-preserved medieval castle in Denmark. What makes it special is the complete defensive setting: two rings of moats with a high earth rampart between them, a drawbridge-style approach, thick walls with stepped gables, and inside, the vaulted rooms and a great hall. The state bought and restored it in the twentieth century and it is now run as a museum, with a large herb garden of medicinal and kitchen plants and a rose garden outside the moats. People come for a quiet, atmospheric hour or two that feels far from crowds. The honest caveat: it is seasonal, roughly spring to autumn, it is remote without a car, and the interiors are sparsely furnished, so it suits people who enjoy old buildings rather than those wanting rich displays.

Seasonal: the castle interior is usually open roughly from May to September or into October, often daily in the summer holidays and with a closed weekday or shorter hours in the shoulder months, and closed in winter - confirm the current season dates and confirm it is open before a long drive. The moats, ramparts and outside of the castle can usually be seen at any time. By car it is roughly 360 km and about 4 hours from Copenhagen over the Great Belt Bridge (toll), via Aarhus or Vejle, Viborg and Skive; from Aarhus about 1 hour 45 minutes. By public transport, take the train to Skive (roughly 4-4.5 hours from Copenhagen with a change), then a local bus towards Rodding or a taxi - check Rejseplanen, as buses are sparse. No advance booking for individuals; groups book ahead.
