Spreewald
UNESCO Biosphere Reserve (1991): A Lowland Maze Of Several Hundred Kilometres Of Navigable Spree Channels Worked By Punt, With Sorbian And Wendish Culture And The Gherkins The Region Is Named For · Luebbenau, Brandenburg
The Spreewald is a lowland maze about an hour south-east of Berlin where the Spree splits into several hundred kilometres of navigable channels between alder woods, water meadows and small market gardens. It has been a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve under the Man and the Biosphere programme since 1991, which is not the same thing as World Heritage and should not be confused with it: the designation is about people living and working in a landscape, which is exactly what you see. The defining experience is a punt, a flat-bottomed Kahn poled by a Fahrmann, which is slow, communal and usually involves food and beer; a canoe gives you the quiet side channels instead. Lehde is the open-air museum village where post once arrived by boat, and Luebbenau and Luebben are the bases. This is also the home of the Sorbian and Wendish minority, a Slavic people with their own living language and bilingual signs, and of the Spreewald gherkin. It is Berlin's easiest day out into real countryside.

The reserve is open country and the paths and cycle routes are free all year. The punts are the seasonal part: public trips from the Luebbenau and Luebben harbours run roughly April to October, hourly or more often on summer weekends and sparsely midweek in spring and autumn, with the last departure in the afternoon because the trips are two to four hours long - confirm times and whether winter trips with blankets are running. Canoe hire follows roughly the same season. The Lehde open-air museum opens seasonally, typically spring to autumn, closed in winter, and the biosphere reserve information centre keeps shorter winter hours. Village restaurants close one or two days a week off season, and much of the tourist infrastructure simply stops between November and March - confirm before travelling.
