Spring Mountain Ranch State Park

Nevada State Park: A Historic Ranch Inside Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, Once Owned By Howard Hughes And By Vera Krupp · Blue Diamond, Nevada

Spring Mountain Ranch State Park is a green, spring-fed historic ranch at the foot of the red and white sandstone cliffs of the Wilson Range, inside Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area and about 35 to 45 minutes west of the Strip. Springs here watered Southern Paiute camps and later travellers and ranchers, and the ranch is said to have passed through a string of colourful owners in the twentieth century: radio star Chester Lauck of Lum and Abner, who built the main ranch house; German actress Vera Krupp, whose famous diamond was reportedly stolen in a robbery at the ranch; and Howard Hughes, whose company reportedly bought it but who is said never to have lived there. Nevada bought it as a state park in the 1970s. Today it is a quiet place of shady lawns, old ranch buildings, picnic tables and a ranch house open on some days for tours, with outdoor Super Summer Theatre shows in summer. It is small and best as a relaxed add-on to a Red Rock day, reached on NV 159 past the scenic drive exit. There is a per-vehicle entry fee.

NO OPENING TIME HERE WAS CHECKED. The typical pattern: the park is open daily for day use from around 8 am to a closing time that shifts with the season, from late afternoon in winter to early evening in summer, and the ranch house opens only on some days and at set tour times, often weekends. Super Summer Theatre nights run later under their own arrangements from about June to September. The traps that ruin a day are driving out on a day the house is closed, arriving after the gate has closed in winter, believing you need a Red Rock timed-entry slot for the ranch and giving up, and planning around Bonnie Springs, which is reported closed. Confirm current times with Nevada State Parks before relying on them.
