Spring Mountains National Recreation Area
National Recreation Area In The Humboldt Toiyabe National Forest, Designated 1993; Charleston Peak, About 11,916 Feet · Mount Charleston, Nevada
Spring Mountains National Recreation Area, known locally as Mount Charleston, is a range of forested limestone peaks rising straight out of the Mojave Desert about 45 minutes north-west of the Las Vegas Strip. Congress designated it in 1993 as a unit of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, and it climbs from creosote desert through pinyon and juniper, ponderosa pine and white fir to bristlecone pines near the top of Charleston Peak, about 11,916 feet, the highest point in southern Nevada. Because of the height it runs roughly 20 to 30 F cooler than Las Vegas, which makes it the city's summer refuge and, in winter, its snow playground. Two paved canyons carry most visitors: Kyle Canyon, with the Spring Mountains Visitor Gateway, lodges and trails to Mary Jane Falls and Cathedral Rock, and Lee Canyon, with a ski area and the Bristlecone Trail. The range shelters plants and animals found nowhere else, including the Mount Charleston blue butterfly. Flooding from Hurricane Hilary in August 2023 damaged roads and trails; check current closures before going.

NO OPENING TIME HERE WAS CHECKED. The typical pattern: the roads and trails are open 24 hours, year-round, except where closed for storm damage, snow or fire danger; the Spring Mountains Visitor Gateway, lodges, restaurants and the ski area keep their own daytime or seasonal hours, and most campgrounds and many picnic areas open only from late spring to autumn. The traps that ruin a day are finding a trail or road closed since the 2023 floods, arriving at midday on a snowy weekend to closed roads and full lots, driving up without chains on a snow day, starting Charleston Peak too late to beat storms, and assuming the Mt Charleston Lodge is open. Confirm current times before relying on them.
