Springfield Armory National Historic Site

National Historic Site; National Historic Landmark · Springfield, Massachusetts

The first national armoury of the United States, sited here by George Washington in 1777 because the bluff above the Connecticut River was defensible and beyond the reach of naval attack, and manufacturing small arms for the American military until it closed in 1968. It holds the largest historic collection of American military firearms in the world. Its rack of stacked muskets — the Organ of Muskets — is the object Longfellow saw in 1843 and turned into a poem against war.
