Spruce Knob

Mountain Peak · Riverton, West Virginia

At 4,863 feet the highest point in West Virginia and the highest on the whole Allegheny Plateau, on a windswept ridge in the Monongahela National Forest. A paved road runs almost to the top and a half-mile paved loop circles the summit past a stone observation tower, which makes it one of the few eastern state high points that requires no hiking at all. The red spruce on the summit grow branches only on their eastern side, flagged by a wind that effectively never stops.

Forest Road 104, Riverton, West Virginia, 26814, United States

Summit road and car park open roughly spring to autumn. Forest Road 104 is NOT maintained or plowed and is normally impassable from around December until spring. The summit, the trail and the tower are free and never gated in season.
