Sri Menanti
The Royal Town Of The One Malaysian State That Inherits Through The Mother'S Line, With A Four Storey Timber Palace Built In 1908 Without A Single Nail · Kuala Pilah, Negeri Sembilan
NEGERI SEMBILAN IS THE ONE MALAYSIAN STATE WHERE PROPERTY AND TITLE PASS THROUGH THE MOTHER'S LINE. The settlers who came from MINANGKABAU IN SUMATRA brought ADAT PERPATIH - A MATRILINEAL CUSTOMARY LAW - and it survived here, alongside Islam, for centuries, which makes this a genuinely unusual corner of the Malay world. THEY ALSO BROUGHT THE ROOFLINE: steep gables sweeping up at both ends LIKE BUFFALO HORNS, and once you notice it you see it on every public building in the state. THE ISTANA LAMA AT SRI MENANTI IS THE MASTERPIECE - A FOUR-STOREY TIMBER PALACE COMPLETED IN 1908, BUILT BY TWO LOCAL CRAFTSMEN, WITH NO NAILS ANYWHERE IN IT, standing on ninety-nine carved pillars. It is now a museum, it is free, and there is almost never anyone there. Shoes come off at the door and modest dress is expected, the working palace next door is not open and should not be approached, and the museum closes on some days and during royal events - check before driving ninety minutes from Kuala Lumpur.
