St Charles Avenue Streetcar

National Historic Landmark · New Orleans, Louisiana

The oldest continuously operating street railway line in the world, running since 1835, and still worked by olive-green Perley Thomas cars built in the 1920s with wooden seats, brass fittings and windows you push up by hand. It runs thirteen miles from Canal Street out through the Garden District and Uptown under a tunnel of live oaks to Carrollton and back. It costs a dollar twenty-five, it takes about ninety minutes round trip, and it is the best value in the city — with one significant caveat about access.
