St. Fidelis Basilica
Minor Basilica; National Register Of Historic Places · Victoria, Kansas
A limestone Romanesque church with twin hundred-and-forty-one-foot towers standing over a village of about a thousand people in Ellis County, built between 1908 and 1911 by Volga German farmers who quarried the stone themselves and hauled it in by wagon — each family assessed six wagonloads and forty-five dollars. William Jennings Bryan saw it in 1912 and called it the Cathedral of the Plains, and the name stuck. Rome made it a minor basilica in 2014.
601 10th Street, Victoria, Kansas, 67671, United States
FREE and generally open daily through daylight hours for visitors, with a self-guided leaflet. It is an active parish church and closes to sightseeing during Mass, weddings and funerals — weekday visits are the most reliable. Group tours by prior arrangement with the parish.
