St Louis Cathedral

Minor Basilica; National Historic Landmark District · New Orleans, Louisiana

The three spires at the head of Jackson Square, and the oldest cathedral in continuous use in the United States. There has been a church on this spot since 1727; the present building went up between 1789 and 1794 after the great fire, and was substantially rebuilt and given its present towers in the 1850s. It is small by cathedral standards, it is free, it is open to visitors almost every day, and it is the single most photographed building in Louisiana — largely by people standing in Jackson Square who never go in.

615 Pere Antoine Alley, New Orleans, Louisiana, 70116, United States

FREE and generally open to visitors most days through the middle of the day, with a self-guided leaflet and a donation invited — no ticket required. It is a working cathedral and the seat of the archdiocese: Mass, weddings, funerals and major liturgies take priority and close the nave to sightseeing without notice, with Saturday afternoons particularly unreliable. Mass times are posted at the door and change seasonally.
