St. Mary Basilica

Minor Basilica · Natchez, Mississippi

The Gothic Revival church that was the cathedral of the Diocese of Natchez, begun in 1842 and finished in stages over more than forty years by a congregation that included Irish immigrants who had come to build the levees and the railways. Its spire is the tallest thing in Natchez and is the first thing visible from the river. Pope John Paul II raised it to the rank of minor basilica in 1998 — a designation held by only a small number of churches in the United States — and it is still an active parish, which is to say the doors are usually open and there is usually nobody in it.

107 South Union Street, Natchez, Mississippi, 39120, United States

An active parish church, free, and generally open during the day for visitors and private prayer with no ticket and usually no attendant. Access is limited during Mass, weddings and funerals. Mass times are published by the parish and should be checked rather than assumed.
