St. Michaels
Heritage District · St. Michaels, Maryland
A small Eastern Shore harbour town on the Miles River that made its living building log canoes and skipjacks and now makes it from people who come to look at them. The story it tells about itself is that in 1813, warned of a British night attack, the townspeople hoisted lanterns into the trees and onto masts so the naval gunners aimed high and overshot — which is why it calls itself the town that fooled the British. Historians are sceptical. Everyone in St. Michaels tells it anyway.

A town, accessible at all times. Shops and galleries on Talbot Street generally keep daytime hours with reduced days out of season, and some close entirely in winter. Restaurants run into the evening and NEED BOOKING AT WEEKENDS. The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum at the foot of the street keeps its own hours and charges separately. Summer weekends are very busy and street parking disappears by mid-morning.
