St. Paul's Chapel
Church · New York, New York
THE OLDEST SURVIVING CHURCH BUILDING IN MANHATTAN, completed 1766 and the only pre-Revolutionary building in the city still standing on its original site and in continuous use. GEORGE WASHINGTON WORSHIPPED HERE on his inauguration day in 1789 and his pew is marked. ⚠ IT STOOD ACROSS THE STREET FROM THE WORLD TRADE CENTER ON 11 SEPTEMBER 2001 AND WAS NOT DAMAGED — not a window broken — and became the recovery workers' refuge for eight months.
209 Broadway, New York, New York, 10007, United States
FREE — the chapel, the churchyard, George Washington's pew and the permanent 9/11 recovery ministry exhibition all cost nothing. Generally open daily with its own hours, and free guided tours on a published schedule. ⚠ THE STEP-FREE ENTRANCE IS FROM THE CHURCHYARD SIDE, not the Broadway steps. Sightseeing pauses during services, and the chapel is observed rather than open for sightseeing on 11 September. ⚠ Part of the Trinity Wall Street parish; much of the shared music programme is free. ⚠ HOURS NOT VERIFIED FOR THIS FILE.
