St Simons Island

Island · St Simons Island, Georgia

The largest and busiest of Georgia's Golden Isles, reached by causeway from Brunswick, and the one people actually live on — a working island of live oak avenues, marsh creeks and a village at the pier rather than a resort strip. The 1872 lighthouse still works and you can climb it. Fort Frederica, Oglethorpe's 1736 garrison town, is at the north end, and Christ Church stands under oaks a mile from it. What separates it from Jekyll next door is that it is busier, greener and less managed.

530 Beachview Drive, St Simons Island, Georgia, 31522, United States

A public island, reachable at all hours by causeway from Brunswick — check current toll arrangements. Beaches and the pier are free and open daily; some beach parking is charged in season. The lighthouse and museum keep daytime hours and Fort Frederica is a separately ticketed National Park Service site with its own hours.
