Staten Island Greenbelt

Nature Preserve · Staten Island, New York

⚠ ROUGHLY 2,800 ACRES OF CONTIGUOUS FOREST, WETLAND AND MEADOW IN THE MIDDLE OF NEW YORK CITY — one of the largest urban woodlands in the United States, with some 35 miles of marked trail. ⚠ IT WAS CREATED BY DEFEATING A ROBERT MOSES HIGHWAY: the Richmond Parkway would have cut straight through it, and the campaign to stop it made the Greenbelt.

700 Rockland Avenue, Staten Island, New York, 10306, United States

⚠ FREE, AND THE PARKING IS FREE — 2,800 acres and some 35 miles of marked trail in the middle of New York City, at no cost, which has no equivalent in the other four boroughs. Open dawn to dusk; ⚠ THE TRAILS ARE UNLIT. ⚠ GET A MAP AT THE GREENBELT NATURE CENTER ON ROCKLAND AVENUE BEFORE YOU WALK — the colour-blazed network is genuinely confusing, the trails cross and share sections, and PHONE SIGNAL IS PATCHY IN THE INTERIOR. People get lost in here. ⚠⚠ TICKS AND LYME DISEASE ARE A GENUINE RISK AND THIS IS NOT BOILERPLATE: long trousers tucked into socks, repellent, and a full check afterwards. The deer population is why. ⚠ LATE AUTUMN THROUGH EARLY SPRING IS THE BEST HIKING — fewer ticks, no leaves, and the network reads properly. ⚠ Allow a good hour from the St George ferry terminal by bus; people underestimate Staten Island constantly.
