Statue of Liberty National Monument

National Monument · New York, New York

A 151-foot copper figure on a 154-foot pedestal, given by France in 1886 and standing on a former army fort in New York Harbor, whose star-shaped walls are still the base she rests on. She was a monument to republican liberty before she was a symbol of immigration; the association with arrival came later, from the twelve million people who passed Ellis Island a thousand feet away and saw her first.
