Stax Museum of American Soul Music
Specialty Museum · Memphis, Tennessee
A museum on the South Memphis site of Stax Records, the label that made Otis Redding, Booker T. and the M.G.s, Sam and Dave, Isaac Hayes and the Staple Singers, and that did it with a racially integrated house band in a segregated city. The original building — a converted cinema whose sloping floor gave Studio A its sound — was demolished in 1989; this is a faithful reconstruction on the same ground, opened in 2003, holding the label's surviving instruments, costumes and tapes.
926 East McLemore Avenue, Memphis, Tennessee, 38106, United States
Generally open Wednesday to Monday, roughly 10 AM - 5 PM, and CLOSED TUESDAYS for much of the year — check before travelling. Closed on major holidays. Free on-site parking.
