Ste. Genevieve National Historical Park

Historic District · Ste. Genevieve, Missouri

A National Park Service unit created in 2020 around the surviving French colonial town of Ste. Genevieve, the oldest permanent European settlement in Missouri and once the capital of Spanish Louisiana. What makes it a national park rather than a pretty river town is the construction: several houses here are built poteaux-en-terre, with vertical logs set directly into the ground, a French colonial technique that has almost entirely vanished from North America. Others use poteaux-sur-solle, the same vertical logs raised onto a stone sill.

The park visitor centre and the historic houses keep seasonal hours, generally daytime and reduced or closed in winter and on some weekdays - CHECK BEFORE TRAVELLING, because several of the buildings are shown by guided tour only and the schedule is not the same every day. The town itself is a working town and its streets are open at all times. Some of the historic houses are owned and operated by others rather than by the Park Service, with their own hours and tickets.
